Bentley is building an electric car – Tech Insider
Bentley is planning on making a fully electric car to take on Tesla, according to Rolf Frech, the Bentley board member in charge of engineering.
Drive.com first reported Frech’s remarks, which were made at the launch of the Bentayga SUV in Palm Springs last week. Bentley plans on borrowing most of the hardware, batteries, and electric motors from the Porsche Mission E (often referred to as the Tesla Killer). Both Porsche and Bentley are owned by Volkswagen.
Frech added that it will be clearer in the next six months the precise direction Bentley wants to pursue with building an electric car.
However, he added that the Speed 6 concept car could be a contender for Bentley’s first fully electric vehicle.
In the meantime, Bentley will offer a plug-in hybrid version of its Bentayga in 2017 and will offer electrical assistance in the next generation of its Flying Spur model.
