FCA, GM, Toyota, Subaru drive market to 11% gain

Nissan, Honda, Hyundai and Kia brands set records in ‘fast-paced’ truck market Led by double-digit sales increases at Fiat Chrysler, General Motors, Hyundai-Kia, Toyota Motor Corp. and Subaru, the U.S. auto industry closed out a stellar 2014 with a blockbuster December as U.S. consumers took advantage of year-end deals, lower fuel prices and an improving economy. Light-vehicle sales rose 11 percent in December — slightly above forecasts — and 6 percent to 16.53 million for the year. The annualized pace of sales hit 16.92 million units, the third-fastest sales rate of the year. It is the fifth consecutive year U.S. deliveries have increased after hitting a 27-year low of 10.4 million in 2009 during the Great Recession. Thirteen brands — Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Porsche, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Maserati, Land Rover, Hyundai, BMW, Audi, Jeep and Ram — established U.S. sales records in 2014. “Everything you need to have a great month was in place,” said Kurt McNeil, head of U.S. sales operations for GM. “Consumers felt good about the direction of the economy, interest rates and fuel prices were low, and our dealers did a great job introducing customers to our … new and redesigned vehicles.” Among major automakers, Daimler AG, FCA, Nissan Motor and Toyota gained U.S. market share in 2014 while the BMW Group, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai-Kia and Volkswagen Group lost ground. Subaru and Mazda also captured additional share. BMW retakes luxury title The BMW brand reclaimed the luxury-sales crown from Mercedes-Benz in 2014 by a 9,347-vehicle margin: 339,738 vs. 330,391. No. 3 Lexus, which was the luxury leader from 2000 to 2010, is quickly closing the gap on its top two rivals, passing 300,000 in annual sales for the first time since 2007. Meanwhile, Audi (182,011) outsold Cadillac (170,750) for the first time, jumping to the No. 4 luxury brand. Sales at FCA, formerly the Chrysler Group, rose 20 percent in December, capping a year that saw overall volume advance 16 percent. The company posted the biggest gain in U.S. market share among major automakers on robust demand for Ram pickups and Jeeps. Deliveries at GM, helped by heavy promotions, rose 19 percent, with retail volume increasing 23 percent and fleet shipments advancing 6 percent. Sales rose 21 percent at Chevrolet, 23 percent at GMC and 32 percent at Buick, while Cadillac dropped 11 percent. For all of 2014, GM’s sales advanced 5 percent. At Toyota, sales of Lexus, Toyota and Scion models totaled 215,057 last month, a 13 percent increase. The company’s 2014 volume advanced 6 percent. Toyota brand deliveries rose 13 percent and Lexus volume hit a December record of 39,879, up 15 percent. The Camry, with sales of 428,606, ranked as the top-selling car in the U.S. for the 13th straight year. “The industry finished last year on a high note thanks to a strong economic tailwind,” said Bill Fay, general manager of the Toyota division. “That momentum should continue in 2015 and combined with continued strong replacement demand, boost sales further.” Caution Still, some executives and analysts caution that growth will slow in 2015 after five years of rapid recovery. “U.S. auto sales are dancing to a very different, and we believe unsustainable, beat,” Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas warned in a report Monday. Jonas suggested demand for new light vehicles has outpaced U.S. economic, wage and housing growth rates, thanks largely to easy credit access and extended loan terms that are keeping monthly payments manageable for many consumers. Toyota executives said they conservatively expect 2015 sales of 16.7 million vehicles, while others, including LMC Automotive, expect deliveries to hit 17 million. “Any way you slice it, whether it’s 16.7 [million vehicles] or slightly below or above, it’s still a very healthy industry,” Jeff Bracken, head of Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus brand in the U.S., said of the coming year. For some automakers, December and 2014 was a time to celebrate. At FCA, sales last month rose 19 percent at Jeep, 35 percent at Ram, 53 percent at the Chrysler brand and 1 percent at Fiat. Volume slipped 2 percent at Dodge. The company’s U.S. deliveries have now increased 57 consecutive months. For the year, FCA’s sales hit nearly 2.1 million on a 28 percent surge in light-truck deliveries. FCA is particularly well positioned as America rekindles its fondness for SUVs and pickups. For the year, Jeep volume surged 41 percent to 692,348. Ram pickup deliveries surged 24 percent in 2014 to 439,789. Through November, FCA’s U.S. market share stood at 12.7 percent, up from 11.5 percent through November 2013. Jeep’s U.S. market share climbed 1.1 percentage points to 4.2 percent through November. Ford dinged Ford Motor Co. sales rose 1 percent in December and slipped nearly 1 percent for the year, reflecting lower F-150 volume as the company transitions to the redesigned 2015 model. Deliveries last month rose 0.5 percent at the Ford brand and 21 percent at Lincoln Honda Motor Co.’s sales edged up 1.5 percent. Despite a slight drop in volume at the Honda brand in December, U.S. sales at the division set an annual record of 1,373,029. Acura volume rose 13 percent last month and 1.5 percent for the year. Honda — describing the truck market as “fast-paced” — said it set December and full-year records for crossovers and other light trucks. Deliveries of the CR-V crossover rose 13 percent in December to a record 32,369 units, and 10 percent for the year to a record of 335,019. Sales of the Honda Pilot, helped by incentives, surged 28 percent to 11,479 in December. “Despite the price of gasoline dropping well below $3 a gallon in many markets, Honda’s strong, balanced lineup of cars and trucks helped us achieve record sales in 2014,” said Jeff Conrad, general manager of the Honda division. “We will build on this momentum with some great new products coming in 2015.” Core models drive Nissan Deliveries at the Nissan brand rose 9 percent while volume slipped 9 percent at Infiniti last month. For the year, U.S. sales rose 12 percent to a record 1,269,565 at the Nissan division and 1 percent at Infiniti. Fred Diaz, Nissan’s senior vice president for U.S. sales, marketing and operations, credited the company’s core models — Altima, Sentra, Versa and Rogue, as well as the Leaf — for the results. Even with gasoline prices falling in recent months, U.S. deliveries of the Leaf topped 30,000 in 2014 — the first time any plug-in vehicle has reached that milestone in a single year, the company said. Overall, Nissan’s car sales rose 12 percent while truck volume slipped 1 percent last month. For the year, the company’s car volume rose 13 percent, outpacing the 9 percent increase in truck demand. “We expect low gas prices and high consumer confidence to be the magic formula that continues to bring more buyers into dealer showrooms,” Diaz said. Subaru shattered the 500,000 annual sales mark in the U.S. for the first time on a 24 percent gain in December deliveries. Mazda reported December volume of 24,808, a gain of 8 percent, and the company’s annual sales topped 300,000 units for the first time since 1994. The company said it retailed 278,880 units last year, the highest total since 1994 as part of a plan to reduce reliance on fleet deliveries. Volkswagen sold 34,058 vehicles last month, essentially flat compared with Dec. 2013, while the brand’s full-year sales fell 10 percent to 366,970. Positive factors Numerous factors are playing out to support robust auto sales heading into 2015. Favorable financing terms, improving household finances, employment gains, new or redesigned models and the plunge in gasoline prices are all combining to attract buyers to U.S. showrooms. “The momentum the economy carried through 2014 accelerated in the fourth quarter,” said Mustafa Mohatarem, chief economist for GM. “Car-buying fundamentals remain strong and we expect higher industry sales in 2015.” A steady wave of recalls — the industry set a record in 2014 — also hasn’t deterred shoppers. “December sums up what we’ve seen all year for automakers, and it’s a fitting finish to a comeback year for the industry,” said John Krafcik, president of TrueCar. “Sales volume growth and the popularity of highly profitable vehicle segments — pickups, utilities and luxury vehicles — has been immensely beneficial to automakers’ revenue and we expect more good news in 2015.” To end the year on a high note, there were plenty of deals promoted throughout the month and many dealers extended showroom hours between Christmas and the New Year holiday weekend to handle additional volume. Analysts at Edmunds.com estimate about 33 percent of the month’s sales happened in the last week of December. With gasoline prices falling below $2 a gallon in large swaths of the country, automakers and dealers sweetened discounts on hybrids. Tom Wood Lexus near Indianapolis dangled a $299 a month lease for 27 months and $1,099 due at signing on the 2015 CT 200h. The dealership also threw in a $250 Amazon.com gift card for customers who bought or leased any new vehicle through Jan. 3. Other deals: • BMW offered up to $3,500 off select 2015 models nationwide. • Buick and GMC extended a deal started in November that provided buyers cash back equal to 20 percent of MSRP on older 2014 and 2015 inventory. Chevrolet ran a similar deal on select cars. • Chrysler pitched a $239 a month lease for 39 months on the Chrysler 200 midsize sedan with zero down, no first payment and zero security deposit for buyers with top-notch credit. Honda offered several lease deals with no down payment or security deposit on popular or older models. The first lease payment was also waived: • $320 monthly lease on the 2015 Pilot LX with two-wheel drive for 36 months. • $270 monthly lease on the Accord LX sedan for 36 months. • $230 monthly lease on the 2015 Civic LX sedan for 36 months. Trucks, prices shift higher Kelley Blue Book said light-vehicle transaction prices rose nearly 3 percent year-over-year to $34,367 in December — making it the highest month on record for average transaction prices. Pricing was strong across most of the industry with the exception of hybrids and electric vehicles, KBB said. It was also the year of the light truck for most automakers. Buyers purchased more pickups, minivans, crossovers and SUVs than cars every month in 2014. That’s something automakers haven’t enjoyed since 2004 when a barrel of oil sold for less than $40. Omari Gardner and Ryan Beene contributed to this report. Rouble trouble for the auto industry in 2015

2014 has been a rollercoaster year for Russia, a year that is set to end more differently than anyone might have expected 12 months ago. The feeling of goodwill in the days that followed the Sochi Winter Olympic Games is but a distant memory, overshadowed by Russia’s defiant stance on the Ukraine crisis, the country’s resultant international isolation and its recent admission that it faces recession in 2015. As we write, the rouble’s freefall (down 50% in 2014) has been temporarily slowed following the government’s decision to start selling foreign exchange. Too little, too late, is the general consensus. This action may help to halt the rouble plunging against the dollar, but it will do little to halt plunging oil prices – the country depends on US$100 a barrel for oil which is currently trading at around US$60 – rising interest rates and the effects of sanctions. “One OEM senior vice president told Automotive World that the volatility in the Russian market is such that a swing (read: decline) of 500,000 units in a year is of much less concern than it would be in an established market like Germany”   However, Russia’s highly volatile and rapidly worsening situation has given an interesting short-term boost to certain industries, including automotive and consumer electronics. Aware that their roubles may rapidly lose value, people are spending their cash and boosting retail sales ahead of anticipated major price increases. There are some planned automotive investments going ahead – Toyota recently invested in its Russian factory, and Ford has begun production of the EcoSport at its JV with Sollers. These investments may surprise, but one school of thought suggests playing the long game. One OEM senior vice president told Automotive World that the volatility in the Russian market is such that a swing (read: decline) of 500,000 units in a year is of much less concern than it would be in an established market like Germany; the OEM SVP was confident that Russia would bounce back, and continue on its path to Europe’s number one car market. There’s another school of thought, however, that says that months before the Olympic flame even reached Sochi, it was already clear that Russia was showing much less growth potential than it had over the rest of the last decade. In the years after 2008, the pace of market growth and development, and the fact that the country appeared to have ridden the financial crisis that damaged so many other economies, made Russia a must-have on many OEMs’ target market lists. Now, with slow and patchy recovery in mainstream Europe, Russia’s current crisis looks set to have a significant negative impact on the automotive industry in 2015.   “Months before the Olympic flame even reached Sochi, it was already clear that Russia was showing much less growth potential than it had over the rest of the last decade”   The experience of 2014 has shown how quickly strong consumer confidence can be shattered. Asian OEMs which had bet on Russian growth are suffering; major global OEMs announced several production cuts in recent months, and that was ahead of the latest, most difficult of market conditions. Across the 12 months of 2015, it’s hard to see anything other than a major economic decline that will make a major dent in the Russian car market’s long-anticipated rise to the top – a dent that could take years to repair.             Source: Martin Kahl _ http://www.automotiveworld.com/analysis/comment-rouble-trouble-auto-industry-2015/

Israeli innovation gives global auto industry added value

Israeli innovation gives global auto industry added value Alternative fuel, traffic sensors, and information about road conditions are some of the things Israel has to offer.   Since the days of the Israeli-made Sussita, and until quite recently, it appeared that Israel was of no special interest to the global auto industry. Renault was won over by Shai Agassi, and invested in his unsuccessful Better Place electric car venture, but big names like Fiat, Toyota, and BMW stayed away from the local arena. Over the past year, however, the world’s leading auto manufacturers have decided to switch gears and look for innovation in Israel. They aren’t looking for innovative auto design; they want technologies that will give cars added value. Fiat, which is behind Alpha Romeo, Jeep, and Chrysler, to name a few, is one of the leading companies showing interest in Israel. As early as the beginning of the preceding decade, reports appeared that the Italian manufacturer was considering cooperative efforts, or even the establishment of an Israeli R&D center subordinate to the company’s Italian R&D center (CRF). At the beginning of this year, a Fiat team visited Israel to check out the possibility of establishing a local R&D center. The company will try to focus less on things like the Internet and high tech, and more on alternative fuels. It was reported that this visit was a continuation of an Israeli delegation’s visit to Turin last year, which included Israeli government representatives, and was initiated by the Mediterranean Car Agency (MCA), Fiat’s official importer in Israel, among others. Israel Export & International Cooperation Institute director for International Projects, Target Countries, and Automotive Uri Pachter says that one of the things in which Fiat is showing interest is the use of methanol as an alternative to the gasoline. “The intention is to establish a center in Israel that will jointly develop methanol, after which it will be installed in systems and used to fuel cars in Israel,” he says. “There are discussions, but no final decision on the matter has been taken yet.” At the same time, Fiat subsidiary Magenti Marelli, which develops and manufactures systems and technology components for the auto industry, plans to hold a special day in the next few months, during which it will meet a number of Israeli companies in order to consider cooperation. Another manufacturer taking a close look at the local market is BMW. Pachter explains that the connection with the German manufacturer began in 2008, and was based on subcontracting for spare parts and sub-systems, but is now focusing more on the local high-tech scene. The turning point came last year at a major event held by the Export Institute in Munich under the auspices of the Ministry of the Economy’s trade mission there, in which 30 Israeli companies took part. “Following that technology event, several Israeli companies initiated contacts with BMW. A number of agreements were signed, and things began to move,” Pachter explains. Last month, a senior BMW delegation visited Israel to meet with Israeli companies and with the Chief Scientist in order to hear from him about the plans for integrating international companies in the local market. At the same time, at the beginning of the year, representatives from BMW i Ventures, BMW’s investment fund, attended the Israel Dealmakers Summit held by Landmark Ventures in New York for the purpose of examining at close range possible investments in Israeli startups. Two other auto manufacturers that are zeroing in on Israel are Spanish company SEAT and Czech company Skoda. Earlier this year, Ministry of the Economy director general Amit Lang visited SEAT’s offices in Spain, and presented to senior executives from the company a number of Israeli technologies likely to interest the Spanish manufacturer. In addition, representatives of the Ministry of the Economy and the Export Institute visited Skoda headquarters near Prague last year, and made a presentation about 20 Israeli companies to Skoda representatives. US auto manufacturer Ford is another company whose name has been linked with the local high-tech industry, and the company held a special technology event last year at which a number of Israeli companies made presentations to senior Ford executives and representatives of Fords sub-contractors. “Great expectations” Toyota is the most recent auto manufacturer to express interest in Israeli innovation. The company organized a hackathon for Israeli developers today, in which it is searching for special developments in various fields. Susumu Kono, a senior researcher at Toyota’s Toyota Info Tech Center subsidiary, which is looking for new technologies for the Japanese auto manufacturer, said that it was the second hackathon the company was holding outside of Japan, after a similar event in Mountain View in Silicon Valley last year. “I heard that Israeli engineers were coming up with creative ideas, and I want to see it from close up,” Kono said in explaining why he is visiting Israel. “We have no specific technologies that we’re looking for, but we came to Israel because Israel is where applications like Waze are being developed, and we have great expectations from the market here. There are high-quality people here with open minds and a supportive environment in the form of venture capital funds and government support.” According to Kono, the subjects of interest to Toyota are using big data stored by the company from the use of its vehicles, such as driving speed, the road situation, temperatures inside and outside the car, etc. “We want to see how we can use these data with innovative developments,” he explained. GM’s investment arm Even before the current wave, General Motors was the first auto manufacturer to recognize the potential in Israel’s development talent, and set up a development center in Israel from scratch. The center brought together scientists and researchers, who engaged mainly in developing car sensors. Since that time, the development center has hired software engineers, developers, and big data personnel, and currently has 100 employees under the management of General Motors Israel CEO Gil Golan. General Motors has been indirectly cooperating with Israel since 1995, but only in 2007 did the company realize that it was worthwhile establishing an R&D center here, and that Israel was a critical location for exceptional technologies and innovation for the auto industry. “Some of the things we’re working on have already gone into General Motors vehicles, but more substantial things will be put in later,” Golan explains. Four years ago, General Motors International, like quite a few global corporations, launched an investment fund. Its fund is called GM Ventures. The fund, which was initially allocated $100 million, uses the local development center as its Israeli investment arm, and invested $5 million in Powermat, which is developing a wireless charging surface for mobile devices, as early as 2011. The fund has also invested in four other Israeli companies. “The auto industry has become very attractive, with a huge variety of technologies. It’s possible to see how any technology you can think of can be adapted to the auto industry,” Gil Golan says. “In recent years, together with the radical development of technologies that affect the auto industry, but aren’t the industry’s core, therehas been a change towards combining the unusual with the conventional. An opportunity has therefore been created here that is very relevant to the Israeli high-tech industry. A car company won’t look for conventional things here, such as the next generation of engines, because there are better places for that. But features like sensors, vision systems, sensory systems, information security, and user experience-based interfaces are at the core of the local industry,” he says. Concerning the interest being shown by other manufacturers, such as Fiat and BMW, Golan comments, “It only goes to show how important the matter is for the auto industry, because this industry is hungry for innovation. We have no doubt that in the next five years, there will be more automotive players in Israel.” At the same time, he made it clear that if other manufacturers do important things in Israel, it will be through the establishment of R&D centers from scratch, not by acquiring local companies, as technology giants like Apple and Facebook did. “In the auto industry, the practice of acquisitions is less well known. It makes the process harder – building something from scratch and relying primarily on organic growth – but the fact that there are other important players in the field and from other fields here eases the risk and gives a feeling of confidence,” Golan continues. Pachter explains that connections with the car manufacturers have already been going on for a decade, but only in the past two years has there been a change in the direction of high tech. “The manufacturers are showing interest in cyber security, communications between vehicles, navigation accessories, augmented reality, technologies that facilitate operation of systems by voice or hand movement, noise reduction during driving, weight reduction, and alternative energy,” he says. According to Pachter, one of the most popular segments is electronic entertainment and smart cars – the result of multimedia systems that have been introduced into cars in recent years on the one hand, and connectivity of cars to the Internet through cellular and WiFi networks on the other. Clear evidence of this can be seen in the CES electronics exhibition, the largest in the world, held early this year in Las Vegas. Mercedes Benz, Tesla, Ford, and General Motors presented various developments in cooperation with technology companies. Among other things, there were car systems that combined large touch screens, use of verbal commands, cameras, and various driver interfaces. It is hard to talk about the auto industry’s interest in Israel without mentioning two names: Better Place and Mobileye(NYSE: MBLY). Better Place created a real buzz about the electric car industry in Israel, but failed in the end. On the other hand, Mobileye, a producer of systems for preventing traffic accidents, has had great success, and made its IPO in the US in August at a company value of $5.3 billion, which has since soared to $10.5 billion. “Mobileye is a good example of the capability that exists here, but that isn’t the only reason for the interest in Israeli companies. There’s no doubt that these two names, combined with the reputation acquired by the Israeli high tech industry over the years, are helping the local market, and creating interest and opportunities,” Pachter says. Better Place and Mobileye have put Israel on the map,” says Golan. “”Better Place created hype that made a connection between electric cars and Israel. Unfortunately, it failed, and that’s a pity. At the same time, it created experience and know-how among its employees, and its CTO and other employees came to work with us and are contributing from this know-how. Every startup aiming at the auto industry, and also those whose product can be used in the auto industry, adds weight.”             Source:http://www.globes.co.il/en/article-israeli-innovation-gives-global-auto-industry-added-value-1000980470
